Granite Basin Life

This is a desultory collection of thoughts and observations from our day to day living in the Prescott National Forest. It's too bad that I didn't start earlier and add the story about the dead skunk and a few other happenings here in the forest. The four legged and winged animals aren't the only creatures that do weird things here.

Sunday, October 17, 2004 Slow day until we noticed that there were sheriff vehicles coming into the day use area. I went down to see what was happening and found a group of people in the Metate trailhead. They were part of the Yavapai county search and rescue group. Two women were lost on the mountain. They were found at 4:30 pm ... good thing because it was starting to get cold and overcast on the mountain. It rained off and on today.

Monday, October 18, 2004 Found a dead mouse in our water bucket this morning. Evidently, he had drowned overnight. Overcast day and starting to be cool during the day. Sam came by and we had chili together for lunch. We played cards with Jack and Carol.

Tuesday, October 19, 2004. Mari and Debbie came up today. We had breakfast at Apple Pan and Bun and the girls went antiquing. We ate lunch at Murphy's. Bun had a house Cabernet Sauvignon that was very smooth. We tried to find it at Fry's but no luck.

Wednesday, October 20, 2004 We did our wash early and then went to Home Depot to pick up a rug and pad for our slideout. Bun also picked up a New Testament daily devotional. We stopped by Staples and picked up an organizer for Cody. Elaine Balinski came up today and we had lunch at Streets of New York and played some pinochle.

Thursday, October 21, 2004 It rained all day today. Went to town and mailed Cody's organizer to him. Only two cars came in here all day. We had a leak around the bedroom door which was pretty severe. We have a spot heater drying it out..

Friday, October 22, 2004 Woke up at about 1 o'clock in the morning and the awning was making some noise so I decided to put it up. Went out and found that it was snowing. I had to squeegee the awning to get the half inch of snow off before it would go up. Jack and Carol came over in the afternoon and we played cards. Went out and bought Bun a new coat and some boots for the winter. We ate at the Red Robin..

Saturday, October 23, 2004 Temperature was down in the low 20s last night and the locks on the gates wouldn't open this morning without being heated. The bird bath was frozen over and it stayed cold most of the day. Sam came over and had lunch with us ... chicken noodle soup. Jack and Carol came over for cards again. Afterwards, I patched up the area over the bedroom door which was leaking. I finished winterizing the water hoses and insulated the inner door where the water comes into the trailer. Tonight is the opening game of the World Series ... Red Sox and Cardinals. Red Sox won..

Sunday, October 24, 2004 Went to Mass. Fr. Daryl spoke about the Pharisee and the Publican. Red Sox won the second game of the World Series..

Monday, October 25, 2004 Bob came up and installed the carpet in the slideout. Sam and Betsy came for Chili..

Tuesday, October 26, 2004 Bun got a haircut today. She also is having problems with shortness of breath and heart palpitations. We are going to Phoenix on Friday to the doctor. Red Sox won again tonight. They now lead the series 3-0..

Wednesday, October 27, 2004 The Forest Service had a nice thank you lunch for all of the volunteers. Also, they passed out certificates of appreciation. We had rain for most of the day. Red Sox swept the Cardinals to win the World Series in 4 straight. This was the first world championship for Boston since 1918..

Thursday, October 28, 2004 This was the first morning of snowfall here in the forest. Beautiful pictures with snow on the pines. Snow all morning and rain for the rest of the day. There were only two vehicles in all day..

Friday, October 29, 2004 The locks on the gates were frozen this morning. We went to Phoenix today for Bun to see the doctor for shortness of breath and heart palpitations. They put Bun in the hospital (John C Lincoln Deer Valley) and ran a series of tests for heart, lungs, and blood clots. All tests were normal or better except for a high reading in her potential for blood clots. The lung X-Ray did show some scar tissue which may be a contributor. Also, there is a potential for pleurisy..

Saturday, October 30, 2004 They continued testing with a chemical stress test and an echo cardiogram. They were good. Bun has a heart injection rate of 73%. They released Bun at 5:00 pm and we went to Bamboo Grille with Mike and Bob for dinner. We stayed the night at Terry and Mari's..

Sunday, October 31, 2004 We went to lunch with Mari at Streets of New York and then came back to the forest. Sam stopped by and saw us. We went to bed early and slept all night. The wind during the night was very strong and gusty..

Monday, November 01, 2004 It was windy most of the day. Jack and Carol came over to play cards. There were only three cars in here all day. We went up to see Brenda as she was winterizing her 5th wheel..

Tuesday, November 02, 2004 Today the weather was nicer although it did get down to 18 last night. Tate Laughlin (a previous Yavapai campground host) came by and visited for an hour or so..

Wednesday, November 03, 2004 We had lunch with Jack and Carol and played cards afterwards. Lots of laughs today. Jack suggested that we use a drop light to heat our water hose as it comes into the trailer. We bought one on the way home and it worked well overnight..

Thursday, November 04, 2004 It was a very nice day today, sunny and warm. Sam came by for lunch and brought a Cortez worker, Lucille, with her. Bun made up a nice kielbasa stew. Jack and Carol brought their RV over and we played cards for most of the afternoon. A lady hiker came by at dark just as I was closing the gate. She had gotten lost and Bun and I gave a ride to her car...

Nov 18 to Dec 4, 2004 Snow here yesterday (December 4), the sticking kind and it is so lovely looking out and watching it come down all over the forest.  The cold is cold, it has been between 8 and 12 in the mornings and we have had frozen pipes for a couple of days.  So, we are learning about all of the tricks about not having this happen and know that when we come back from our 5 month road trip next year we will put up siding and insulation around the camper.  Not doing it this year as would have to tear it off for our trip.  So that is waste of money and material...

As for Christmas trees, we bought 3 different sizes of those real ugly ones that I find really cute ... the ones with all the trunk and scraggly branches ... they are pre lit and going to put some silver beads on them and leave them on patio. Not sure what will happen to them with our birds, squirrels, skunks and whatever out there ... no tree inside as we really don't have the room. We are going down to Mike and Bob's Christmas Eve and staying over for the holiday...

Our Thanksgiving was filled with lots of good food, laughs and just fun with all the family.  We had stayed over at Mari's as I had my post of checkup on that Wed. so no sense of making that 2 hour trip back on Wed and returning again the next day ... all of the family went to her place. She did a great job for having it for the first time and really enjoyed doing it.  ..

We went in to Phoenix on Friday evening (2 hr trip both ways) as Emi and Jon had a Christmas concert at their school ... have always been a big part of their lives and we don't want it to change now due to moving.  It was a lot of fun watching those little ones, in kindergarten, due their little skits and songs ... all 8 grades put on music and played their instruments ... all of went out for dinner together afterwards so didn't put us home til' one Saturday morning but was worth it. Still love being here and doing this kind of living... ..

Monday, December 06, 2004 A drunk driver hit power poles last night at 10:00 PM and we lost power until 3PM today. We also had a great snowstorm overnight and throughout the day. We used our generator all day for the first time...

Wednesday, December 29, 2004 There was an awesome rainstorm all day...

Thursday, December 30, 2004 9:25 AM A coyote just came through our site, sniffed around and left. All the washes ran heavy all day. We went to town tonight and bought photo paper and a pencil sharpener. We printed a picture of Ken and Susy and sent it to them this evening. We ate dinner at Pete's Family Restaurant...

Bayou Segnette is a beautiful state park...

June 9, 2005 Wow… A lot has happened since April 21st. We visited with Rick, Catherine and Leslie in New Orleans. Then we went up to Springfield Illinois and spent time with Liz and Larry Ryner. We had a great time for a few days and a lot of pinochle games. The starter in the van had to be replaced. Then we went over to Noblesville, Indiana to see Seth and his family and had more fun. We had to replace the water pump in the trailer there. We went back to Springfield for a few more pinochle games and then headed back towards Phoenix...

In Oklahoma City, I hit a 9 foot barrier in a WalMart parking lot and had to have the air conditioning unit replaced. We went on to Flagstaff where we found that our slideout would not come out. Had it fixed at Buddy's Welding and RV… Also, we had our van air conditioning fixed nearby. It turned out to be a vacuum hose that was melted by battery acid...

We picked up Cody on Bunnies's birthday and headed for our new hosting job in the Inyo National Forest at the French Camp campground in California. We arrived on the 23rd of May. Cody was with us for two weeks and he had a great time here. He caught fish, hiked, drove the golf cart, and rode the gondola to the top of Mammoth Mountain. We went to Disneyland on the 3rd and 4th of June and spent time there with Mike and Bob. We had a blast and it will always be a great memory. We also saw our friends, Ed and Betty Bick for dinner on the 3rd. We had a good time with them also...

We are now in the forest with Chip and Melanie for the summer. Here's a picture of our site.

July 18, 2005 First big trip since we got here. We went to Carson City for WalMart, Home Depot, Target, and Costco supplies. We left early because of the heat. We took lots of pictures on the way back. Here's the Walker River.

September 1, 2005 We are getting set for a busy Labor Day weekend here at French Camp. We had two bears in the campground last week. We saw one of the bears rummaging in Site 34 in food that the people left out. It's unbelievable that people do not heed the warning about putting their food in the bear boxes. ..

September 23, 2005 It is very windy today. We have just a few more weeks here before heading to Prescott for the winter. Hurricane Rite is headed for Texas. Gas prices are already over $3.00 per gallon. Refineries are closing in Texas and this could lead to prices in the $5.00 range. There are only about 11 campsites of 85 that have campers in them...
